Weather Summary:
A major winter storm is underway across NC and will linger through early Monday morning. A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain has been reported across much of the state, and significant ice accumulation is forecast for portions of the state through this evening. Dangerously cold temperatures behind the system are forecast through next week and may allow impacts to linger, especially for areas that receive the most accumulation. Avoid traveling today and if you must drive, be sure to clear your car of any snow or ice to allow visibility as you drive.
· An Ice Storm Warning is in effect across the southern mountains and SW Piedmont until midday Monday. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect across the northern mountains and much of central NC until midday Monday and portions of the northern Coastal Plain until Monday evening. The Ice Storm Warning in Robeson County is in effect until early Monday morning, and Winter Weather Advisory across eastern NC is in effect through this evening into midday Monday. Snow, sleet, and significant icing is possible within these areas. Accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages.?
?
· A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of mountains overnight Sunday into Monday morning, where wind chills as low as 2-8F are expected.
· Since last evening, snow, sleet and freezing rain have all been reported across NC, and by sunrise today, at least 0.25” of ice accumulation has been reported across the SW mountains. Areas of snow and sleet that remain across the mountains are forecast to change over to freezing rain through the morning, with the greatest ice accumulation expected along the SW mountains and portions of the Blue Ridge Escarpment. While snow and sleet may continue near the VA border, sleet is forecast to change over to freezing rain Sunday morning across the Piedmont. Freezing rain across portions of eastern NC is expected to change over to rain through the day.?
?
· While we may see lulls in precipitation through the day for some locations of NC, a final round is expected to push across NC Sunday evening and overnight. A transition to rain outside of the mountains is mostly likely for southern portions of central and eastern NC.?
?
· Moderate to heavy rainfall is also possible within the southwestern mountains Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. A Marginal Risk (level 1 of 4) for isolated flash flooding remains in place as rainfall may lead to excessive runoff and cause ice to block drainage infrastructure.
· The greatest impacts Sunday will continue to be from ice accumulations, where 0.25” – 0.5” of elevated flat ice accrual remains possible across portions of the mountains, Foothills and much of the Piedmont. Elevated flat ice accumulation of 0.01” – 0.25” are possible across the central mountains, southeastern Piedmont and interior Coastal Plain.?
?
· Additional snow/sleet accumulation of trace to 0.5” are possible Sunday across the western and central Piedmont before a change over to freezing rain.?
?
· Light NW flow snowfall may develop along the TN border overnight into Monday; however, light accumulation is forecast.
· Breezy conditions with wind gusts up to 15-20 mph are expected across much of NC on Sunday. The highest gusts of up to 40-45 mph are possible across the mountains, mainly across the higher elevations. While wind gusts are not forecast to reach advisory level across the mountains, an impact-based advisory may be needed due to the combination of wintry precipitation and elevated wind gusts increasing the potential for power outages and downed trees. Be sure to charge your phone and devices in advance so that you are able to receive alerts.
· Dangerously cold temperatures are forecast through next week, with low temperatures dipping into single digits to near zero Monday night and teens and 20s through the remainder of the week. With breezy conditions, wind chills are forecast to be much lower into next week. A Cold Weather Advisory or Extreme Cold Watch/Warning may be needed for much of NC at various times this week due to the extremely cold temperatures.?
?
· Cold temperatures may lead to hypothermia or frost bite, so take appropriate precautions. Remember to keep generators outdoors and at least 20 ft. away from entry points to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.?
?
· A reinforcing cold front with limited moisture is expected to move through by Wednesday, continuing below normal temperatures and bringing the potential for light snowfall across portions of the state. Forecast confidence remains low but minor accumulation may be possible. ?
