?The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) will transition to an Enhanced Watch posture beginning at 5 p.m. this afternoon, while the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) will remain activated to support counties and ongoing demobilization efforts.

        Weather SUMMARY:

Dangerously cold temperatures are forecast to move into the region Monday and last through the week. Cold temperatures will allow any accumulation from this past weekend’s winter storm to linger, especially on roadways where black ice is likely each night and morning. Avoid traveling today but if you must drive, be sure to clear your car of any snow or ice to allow visibility as you drive.

A Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory remain in effect across portions of the mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain until midday Monday. A Winter Weather Advisory may be needed for lingering impacts from wintry precipitation. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for portions of the mountains this evening until midday Tuesday where wind chills as low as -20F are expected.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of western NC through this morning and a Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect for much of the state from this evening through midday Tuesday, where dangerously cold wind chills are expected and could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken.

Lingering rain showers across eastern NC will continue to shift offshore today with clearing skies forecast Monday across much of the state, except along the TN border where NW flow snow showers are possible. Mostly dry conditions are forecast through the work week. However, a few flurries are possible midweek across the northern Outer Banks as a limited moisture cold front moves through the region, but accumulations are not expected. Our next potential for wintry precipitation returns over the weekend, but forecast confidence is low with this system.

While high temperatures will rise above freezing for portions of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain throughout the day Monday, a cold front will move through during the late afternoon/evening hours, bringing dangerously cold temperatures that will linger through the week. High temperatures Monday will rise into the upper 30s to mid-40s across the eastern half of NC with 20s and low 30s across western areas. Overnight lows Monday will drop into the single digits and teens across the state, with dangerously cold wind chills.
Gusty winds will continue Monday and Tuesday, with wind gusts up to 30-35 mph forecast Monday. The strongest winds are expected across the mountains where gusts up to 45-50mph are possible.
Gusty conditions combined with cold temperatures will allow wind chills to drop below zero across the mountains and NW Piedmont with single digits elsewhere.
High temperatures throughout the week will rise into the 30s and 40s but overnight lows dip into the teens and 20s. Any lingering moisture on sidewalks and roadways will continue the threat of black ice through much of the week.
