On a party-line vote, the NC Senate and NC House voted through a bill – S 249 – this week, which would remap and realign Congressional districts for North Carolina. As we reported last week, one of the reshuffles would be the counties that compose the 1st District in eastern North Carolina.
Under the maps that were in place for the 2024 election, Greene County was part of the 1st District, but it is one of the counties that is part of the reshuffle and would be within the 3rd District in the next election cycle if the new maps are finalized.
Democratic Congressman Don Davis, who represents the 1st District, lives in Greene County. Members of Congress are not required to live in the district they represent but must live in the state at the time of the election.
Short of moving his residence, if Congressman Davis seeks reelection, he could choose to run in either the 1st District or the 3rd District, which is currently represented by Republican Congressman Greg Murphy. The 1st District is currently considered a swing district but is projected to lean more Republican under the new map.
